History of The Lutheran World Federation in
Cambodia
Humanitarian Aid
After the defeat of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime (Democratic Kampuchea) on 7 January 1979, the fledgling People's Republic of Kampuchea government invited a consortium of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to work in the country. The Lutheran World Federation - Cambodia Country Program joined with 26 other agencies, half of them Christian, to contribute to the rehabilitation of war and war crime-ravaged Cambodia. Over the past 29 years, LWF Cambodia has adapted its humanitarian strategies to meet local needs within the evolving contexts of the country:
1979-1980 - emergency relief (NGO Consortium)
1981-1995 - emergency relief and support to Government
1996-1998 - demining, resettlement, and rehabilitation
1999-2002 - integrated rural development
2003-2008 - integrated rural development with an
emphasis on participatory, rights-based empowerment
In 2010, LWF Cambodia will be localized, transforming from a country program of the Lutheran World Federation Department for World Service (LWF-DWS) to an autonomous Cambodian NGO in association with the LWF-DWS.
